Space Flight Laboratory: Disruptively Capable Smaller Satellites

Starla Talbot (UTIAS Space Flight Laboratory )

Dr. Robert E. Zee

The Space Flight Laboratory (SFL) builds big performance into smaller, lower cost satellites. SFL is Canada’s most prolific satellite builder and exporter of satellites internationally. Small satellites built by SFL consistently push the performance envelope and disrupt the traditional cost paradigm. Satellites are built with advanced power systems, stringent attitude control and high-volume data capacity that are striking relative to the budget. SFL arranges launches globally and maintains a mission control center accessing ground stations worldwide. SFL’s mandate is to lower the entry barrier for organizations around the world to meet their needs in space while requiring modest investment. The pioneering and barrier breaking work of SFL is a key enabler to tomorrow’s cost aggressive satellite constellations. This presentation will provide an overview of past and present missions developed by SFL to highlight the state-of-the-art in small satellite technology.
